Florida Cosmetology License Verification
If you need to verify a license for a salon or person, then you can do so by visiting the Florida Board of Cosmetology license verification website. From there you can search for the person or business and see if there are any disciplinary actions on record. This will allow you to make an informed decision about the person and or business providing your service.

Becoming a Licensed Florida Cosmetologist
To become a licensed cosmetologist in the State of Florida you must attend a Florida school of cosmetology and successfully complete a minimum of 1,200 hours of education. Upon the successful completion of the educational hours, a completed cosmetology examination application should be submitted to the Department along with the applicable fees. Once the examination application has been approved, you will receive written notification from the Department's examination vendor, Pearson VUE, to schedule a date and time for your written cosmetology examination. After successfully passing both portions of the cosmetology examination, you will be issued a cosmetology license. The website for Pearson VUE is www.pearsonvue.com. Exception: Florida cosmetology students qualified to take the examination after completion of only 1,000 hours of education and fail the examination must complete the full 1,200 hours of education before reexamination.
Becoming a Registered Nail Specialist
To become a registered nail specialist in the State of Florida you must enroll in a nail specialty program offered by a Florida school of cosmetology and successfully complete a minimum of 240 hours of education. Upon the successful completion of the educational hours, a completed nail specialty registration application should be submitted to the Department along with the applicable fees. Once the application has been approved, the nail specialist registration will be issued. Note: A licensed cosmetologist is not required to have a separate nail specialist registration.
Becoming a Registered Facial Specialist
To become a registered facial specialist in the State of Florida you must enroll in a facial specialty program offered by a Florida school of cosmetology and successfully complete a minimum of 260 hours of education. Upon the successful completion of the educational hours, a completed facial specialty registration application should be submitted to the Department along with the applicable fees. Once the application has been approved, the facial specialist registration will be issued. Note: A licensed cosmetologist is not required to have a separate facial specialist registration.
Becoming a Registered Hair Braider
To become a registered hair braider in the State of Florida you must complete a two-day, 16-hour Board of Cosmetology approved hair braiding course. Upon the successful completion of the educational course, a completed hair braider registration application should be submitted to the Department along with the applicable fees. Once the application has been approved, the hair braider registration will be issued. Note: A licensed cosmetologist is not required to have a separate hair braider registration.
Becoming a Registered Hair Wrapper
To become a registered hair wrapper in the State of Florida you must complete a one-day, six-hour Board of Cosmetology approved hair wrapping course. Upon the successful completion of the educational course, a completed hair wrapper registration application should be submitted to the Department along with the applicable fees. Once the application has been approved, the hair wrapper registration will be issued. Note: A licensed cosmetologist is not required to have a separate hair wrapper registration.
Becoming a Registered Body Wrapper
To become a registered body wrapper in the State of Florida you must complete a two-day, 12-hour Board of Cosmetology approved body wrapping course. Upon the successful completion of the educational course, a completed body wrapping registration application should be submitted to the Department along with the applicable fees. Once the application has been approved, the body wrapping registration will be issued. Note: A licensed cosmetologist is not required to have a separate body wrapper registration.

Apply for Florida Cosmetologist License by Examination
Below are the application requirements for a cosmetologist license in the state of Florida:
- Age: Cosmetology applicants for licensure by examination must be at least 16 years of age or have received a high school diploma
- Education: Applicants must complete 1,200 school hours in a cosmetology program. Florida cosmetology students must apply for licensure by examination
- Examination: Applicants must complete both portions of the examination within a two-year period from the date of the first attempt of either portion of the exam. If both portions of the examination are not passed within a two year period, the applicant will be required to pass both portions of the examination again. If the applicant fails either portion of the examination on the first attempt, the applicant can submit a reexamination application without any additional signatures from the cosmetology school. Remedial hours may be required with verification by the school. - HIV/AIDS Course: Applicants who completed their education at a Florida school should submit the initial HIV/AIDS course completion certificate received from their school. The HIV/AIDS course must have been completed within two years prior to submitting an application and must be at least four hours long. - Graduate Certification: A completed Graduate Certification Form from Section III of form COSMO 1 must be submitted with your application

Florida Cosmetologist Re-Examination
This application is used by applicants seeking an initial license who have previously failed any part of the Florida cosmetology examination. If an applicant fails any portion of the Florida cosmetology examination on the second attempt, the applicant must complete 40 remedial hours which must verified by a Florida school. If an applicant fails any portion of the Florida cosmetology examination on the third attempt, the applicant must complete 80 remedial hours which must be verified by a Florida school. Below are the application requirements:
- Education: For cosmetology applicants that only completed 1,000 hours of education in Florida prior to taking the initial examination, you must return to school and complete the remaining 200 hours of education before you can apply for reexamination. The school official must sign the portion of the application verifying completion of 1,200 cosmetology education hours and the completion date
- Examination: Applicants must complete both portions of the examination within a two-year period from the date of the first attempt of either portion of the exam. If both portions of the examination are not passed within a two year period, the applicant will be required to pass both portions of the examination again. - HIV/AIDS Course: If the initial HIV/AIDS course completion certificate submitted with your original Florida cosmetology examination application is over two years old, you must complete another initial HIV/AIDS course, and submit the course completion certificate with your re-examination application. Florida Cosmetologist License by Current Licensure in Another State or Country
A Florida cosmetology license is required to perform cosmetology services. Out-of-state or out-of-country Cosmetologists who are unable to endorse their licenses in Florida may be eligible for examination as a Cosmetologist in Florida if they have held their cosmetology license for at least one year. Below is a list of the requirements for this application:
- Age: Cosmetology applicants for licensure by examination must be at least 16 years of age or have received a high school diploma
- Examination: Applicants must complete both portions of the examination within a two-year period from the date of the first attempt of either portion of the exam. If both portions of the examination are not passed within a two year period, the applicant will be required to pass both portions of the examination again. If the applicant fails either portion of the examination on the first attempt, the applicant can submit a reexamination application without any additional signatures from the cosmetology school. Florida Cosmetologist License by Endorsement
A Florida cosmetology license is required to perform cosmetology services. If you hold a cosmetology license in another state or the US territories of Samoa, Guam, US Virgin Islands, or Puerto Rico, you may be eligible for endorsement in Florida. Out-of-country applicants, other than applicants from the US territories listed, do not qualify for endorsement. Below is a list of the requirements for this application:
- Endorsement: Attempting to qualify for licensure in Florida without having to take an examination by holding an active cosmetology license in another state whose requirements for licensure are comparable or more stringent than Florida requirements of 1,200 educational hours and passage of a written examination. - Age: Cosmetology applicants must be at least 16 years of age or have received a high school diploma.
- Education: All applicants attempting to endorse an out-of-state license must have completed educational hours comparable or more stringent than those required in Florida. Florida requirements include 1,200 hours and passage of the written Florida Board of Cosmetology examination
- HIV/AIDS Course: Complete a board-approved Initial HIV/AIDS course and submit the course completion certificate with your application. The HIV/AIDS course must have been completed within two years prior to submitting an application and must be at least four hours long
- Out of state licenses: Applicants must hold a valid license to practice cosmetology in another state
- Examination: If you qualify for licensure by endorsement, you will not be required to take the Florida cosmetology examination

Florida Nail Specialist Registration
A Florida specialty registration is required to perform manicure, pedicure and nail extension services. Below is a list of application requirements:
- Age: Specialty registration applicants must be at least 16 years of age or have received a high school diploma

Florida Nail Specialist Registration by Endorsement

Florida Facial Specialist Registration
A Florida specialty registration is required to perform facial specialty services. Facial services are the massaging or treating of the face or scalp with oils, creams, lotions, or other preparations. Below are the application requirements:
- Age: Specialty registration applicants must be at least 16 years of age or have received a high school diploma
- Education: Applicants must complete 260 school hours in a Florida facial specialty program
- HIV/AIDS Course: Applicants should submit the initial HIV/AIDS course completion certificate received from their school. The HIV/AIDS course must have been completed within two years prior to submitting an application and must be at least four hours long. - Examination: You do not have to take the Florida cosmetology examination for this registration

Florida Full Specialist Registration
A Florida specialty registration is required to perform full specialty services. A full specialty registration is a combination of the nail specialty registration and the facial specialty registration. Below is the list of application requirements:
- Age: Specialty registration applicants must be at least 16 years of age or have received a high school diploma
- Education: Applicants must complete 500 school hours in a Florida full specialty program
- HIV/AIDS Course: Applicants should submit the initial HIV/AIDS course completion certificate received from their school. The HIV/AIDS course must have been completed within two years prior to submitting an application and must be at least four hours long. - Examination: You do not have to take the Florida cosmetology examination for this registration
- Certification of Eligibility: A completed Certification of Eligibility Form from Section IV of form COSMO 1 must be submitted with your application

Florida Full Specialist Registration by Endorsement
A Florida specialty registration is required to perform full specialty services. If you hold a full specialty license in another state, or the US territories of Samoa, Guam, US Virgin Islands, or Puerto Rico, you may be eligible for endorsement in Florida. Florida Hair Braider Registration
A Florida specialty registration is required to perform hair braider services. Hair braiding is the practice of weaving or interweaving natural human hair without cutting, coloring, permanent waving, relaxing, removing, or chemical treatment and does not include the use of hair extensions or wefts. Below is the list of application requirements:
- Age: Specialty registration applicants must be at least 16 years of age or have received a high school diploma
- Education: Applicants must complete a Board of Cosmetology approved two-day, 16-hour hair braiding course and submit the course completion certificate with the application
- Examination: You do not have to take the Florida cosmetology examination for this registration
- Fee: Pay the required fee as provided in the application. If applying online, you can pay with a credit card or electronic check. If mailing your application, please include a check payable to the Department of Business and Professional Regulation. Florida Hair Wrapper Registration
A Florida specialty registration is required to perform hair wrapping services. Hair wrapping is the wrapping of manufactured materials around a strand or strands of human hair, without cutting, coloring, permanent waving, relaxing, removing, weaving, chemically treating, braiding, using hair extensions, or performing any other service defined as cosmetology. Below is a list of application requirements:
- Age: Specialty registration applicants must be at least 16 years of age or have received a high school diploma
- Education: Applicants must complete a Board of Cosmetology approved one-day, six-hour hair wrapping course and submit the course completion certificate with the application
- Examination: You do not have to take the Florida cosmetology examination for this registration
- Fee: Pay the required fee as provided in the application. If applying online, you can pay with a credit card or electronic check. Florida Body Wrapper Registration
A Florida specialty registration is required to perform body wrapping services. Body wrapping is a treatment program that uses presoaked herbal wraps for the purposes of cleansing and beautifying the skin of the body. Below is a list of the application requirements:
- Age: Specialty registration applicants must be at least 16 years of age or have received a high school diploma
- Education: Applicants must complete a Board of Cosmetology approved two-day, 12 hour body wrapping course and submit the course completion certificate with the application
